Letter "O" to show mask

I'm working my way through the Lightroom and ran into a snag when I got to Linear and Radial Gradients. I can apply masks, and reveal masks by hovering the cursor over the corresponding pin. But pressing the letter "o" has no effect. Am I doing something wrong? Any guidance would be much appreciated!
