Lightroom 5.7.1 vs. Lightroom CC

A couple of years back, I purchased Lightroom 5 from B&H, but never took the time to learn the program.  Have since joined a photo club and want to begin learning the software.  Adobe has also moved on to a subscription based offering.

Can I, as a beginner, utilize my Lightroom 5.7.1 without any issues, and if I at a later date wanted to upgrade, are there any downsides??  Hate to 'trash" the original investment, but also do not want to make a mistake by trying to salvage the initial investment.

Thank you!

Hi Frankh1396032,

You can continue to use Lightroom 5 with all its offerings and features. Once you get use to it and have a good understanding of the program, you can plan to upgrade to Lightroom CC.

Edit: You'll need to upgrade your working catalog to Lightroom Classic CC, the process is quite easy as described here: How to create and manage catalogs in Photoshop Lightroom Classic CC

To understand the basic difference between the two apps, please check out the articles below:

Hope that helps.

If you decide to move to the subscription-based Lightroom in the future, it is a relatively seamless process. When you install Lightroom Classic CC the new program will recognize that the catalog will have to be upgraded and will do that automatically. All of your work will be in the new upgraded catalog, so your work will continue basically uninterrupted.

The new Lightroom CC is a cloud-based Lightroom. You cannot transition from Lightroom 5.7.1 to the new Lightroom CC. It is a unique animal that is only "compatible" with Lightroom Classic CC. But if you should choose to go in that direction in the future you could install the trial version long enough to convert your catalog and then go through the transition to the cloud-based Lightroom. Don't overburden yourself with the details of that right now. Lightroom 5.7.1 isn't being updated anymore, there's no support for new cameras and no updates to fix any issues. If its meeting your needs at the moment you can use it with confidence. And there are ways to move forward when you decide that it's time to do so.
