Question

Lightroom causing DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION crashing whole computer including two BSoDs.

Hi,

I've just started Lightroom and have gone for the Lr version, installed to my computer. The first 5 days or so had no issues then I started getting hangs and stutters. Then about 3-4 days after that I started getting full system crashes, only when using Lr. The first two went to full Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) with the error DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION, the subsequent 3-4 have just crashed the computer which then restarts itself. I don't know whether Lr/Adobe CC is submitting error/crash reports as I receive no actual error messages. First indication I get that it's a full crash and not a stutter is the mouse fully freezing. Music (if playing) continues for up to 40 seconds before the system crash.

Help, System Info:

Lightroom version: 7.4.1 x64 [ 20240625-1512-ca1977c ] (Jun 25 2024)

Operating system: Windows 10
OS Version: Windows 10 Pro (2009)

Computer model: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. MS-7C56 / AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 6-Core Processor
Built-in memory: 32694.0 MB
Real memory available to Lightroom: 32694.0 MB
Graphics Processor Info: DirectX: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 (32.0.15.6070) - 10 GB

Initially this problem was not consistent but as time has gone on I think it has become a recurring problem I cannot avoid when using masks.  It may be cumulative i.e. when I apply multiple masks to multiple images the stutters and hangs appear to accumulate, finally culminating in a crash. I cannot give a specific series of steps to reproduce the problem however my expected result of using a Lightroom feature would be for the feature to work and not to crash my computer. I have tried to find crash reports within Lightroom or my Adovbe Creative account and cannot find one. I cannot provide video or gif of a crash as this would not save.

I have DDU'd the GPU driver and ensured I have the latest version, ran a memtest to verify my RAM is fine and uninstalled - reinstalled Lr.

Hey, @Rey38741859q606. Welcome to the Lightroom Community. I'll help you figure this out.

I've read about this error in the past, and quick searches reveal a common link with the driver failing your WiFI adapter.

Try using the LAN cable, or use a different WiFi Adapter if the one you're using is an external dongle. If not, seek assistance from the WiFi hardware manufacturer to clean up and reinstall the drivers.

Let me know how it goes. Thanks

Hi Sameer,

Thanks for getting back to me, I appreciate your time. However the quick searches you undertook did not reveal the correct answer in this case I'm afraid.  I do not have wifi on this computer, I only use ethernet.

I would highlight this is only an issue with Lightroom, no other application or computer use causes these crashes so I would struggle to see how it could be related to something like a Wifi adapter anyway (I'm using the desktop version of Lightroom with photos on my computer so I'm not sure what internet has to do with my photo editing). Regardless I reviewed the drivers for the Network adapters I do have and they are all up to date.

Reviewing Adobe forums and external forums I don't think I am the only person experiencing issues with masking in Lightroom so I do think this is a Lightroom issue predominantly although I realise it could be exacerbated by something else so I am willing to try fixes. I have some cras dump files from the BSoDs but I cannot attach them below (.dmp), perhaps I could get an e-mail address to send them to for technical revision?

@Sameer K

Kind regards and thanks again for your time.
