Lightroom CC not downloading original when editing?

I have synced all my photo's into the Creative Cloud and have setup an external HD where originals should be copied as backup. Now I'm trying to edit some photos without the external drive connected and I'm expecting LR to download the original from the cloud but it seems that LR uses the smart previews instead. Which look ugly on my 5K Mac. Any way to work around this?
