Hello -

Anyone using Lightroom Classic on a MacBook Air M4.? I am not a professional - photography is a hobby . Have used Lightroom classic on MacBook Pro and laptop needs to be replaced. Will I be able to run Lightroom Classic on the McBook air?
Any advice would be most appreciated !

Hi @teresap123,

That's a great question and a timely one. Lightroom Classic runs beautifully on the MacBook Air M4, especially for hobbyist or moderate editing workloads. The new M4 chips are very efficient and handle Lightroom's processing pipeline (including AI Denoise, masking, and raw rendering) quite well.

A few points to help you decide between the MacBook Air M4 and the MacBook Pro M4/M5:

Performance & Cooling:
 • The MacBook Air M4 has no fan, so it runs silently, but under long, intensive Lightroom sessions, it may throttle performance slightly to manage heat.
 • The MacBook Pro M4/M5, on the other hand, has active cooling and sustains higher performance for longer editing sessions, a plus if you edit large RAW libraries.

Display:
 • The MacBook Pro's mini-LED (XDR) display offers higher brightness and contrast, which makes it much better for photo work and color accuracy.
 • The Air's Retina display is still excellent, but not as bright or HDR-capable.

Memory:
 • All M4 MacBook Air models come with 16 GB unified memory (base), which is sufficient for Lightroom Classic and Photoshop.
 • If you plan to multitask or use AI-heavy tools, consider 24 GB or 32 GB on a Pro for extra headroom.

Price Consideration:
 • With the M5 MacBook Pro now released, you may see price drops on the M4 MacBook Pro models — worth checking if it fits your budget, as you'd get the better display, cooling, and overall longevity.

In short:
 • For light to moderate editing > MacBook Air M4 is an excellent, portable choice.
 • For heavier workloads or future-proofing > consider a discounted MacBook Pro M4, if within budget.
