lightroom cloud not exporting location data to jpg files

7 day trial of Lightroom cloud 9.3.2. It seems good overall, but the location data I updated across 400 photos is not exporting with the jpg files.

Pretty annoyed about this really as I now have to tag them again in another app.  Its a deal breaker really and I’m sure there must be other apps similar to lightroom that export location data with the photos metadata.

Windows 11 Pro 64 bit

Thank you for following up and for taking the time to investigate the behavior yourself.
The expectation could be that updating the City/State/Country information and seeing the image on the map would automatically populate the underlying GPS coordinates.

I’m glad you were able to identify what was happening and that it wasn’t an export bug after all. I’ll pass your feedback regarding the workflow and usability of location assignment to the product team.

Thank you again for the detailed investigation and for sharing your findings with the community.

    Hi @Anshul_Saini

    Thanks for your reply.
Now I’ve had a play with Cloud and Classic, it is probably user error & expectations not matching functionality.  In Cloud, I was expecting that when you add the City, State, Country and it shows on the map, then it would update the GPS info to match the location shown.  It’s now clear this is not the case. The map view appears to be for info only and does not auto-update the GPS location if none is stored.  Its a shame this isn’t an option really, it would be nice to have when you don’t need an exact location (write map location to GPS data when GPS location not known).

This is seen in the ‘right click’ file properties view in Windows Explorer and another metadata viewer.

However, if I copy GPS info from Google Maps and paste it in:

That GPS location is saved to the file metadata:

Lr Classic seems to have a slightly improved map function when adding GPS info. I think now I’ve seen how they work and understand the function of map info / GPS location fields, I’ll go ahead with the full version after the trial.

    Kind regards,

    Ben

    Hi @Ben-G.,

Thanks for giving Lightroom a try and for taking the time to report this. I can understand why that would be frustrating, especially after spending time adding location data to hundreds of photos only to find it missing in the exported JPGs.
I just did a quick test on my side, and location metadata was exported correctly, so I’d like to better understand what’s happening in your workflow.

Could you please check one thing first? During export, is “All Metadata” selected?

A couple of questions that would help narrow this down:

    • What application are you using to verify the location metadata in the exported JPG?

    • Does the location appear correctly inside Lightroom before export?

If possible, please share a short screen recording demonstrating your workflow: add/view location metadata, then export the image and check the exported JPG metadata.

If you’d like, you can also share one sample image, and I can try to reproduce the same workflow on my end.

We’ll do our best to help figure out what’s going on.

    Best,
    Anshul Saini
