Lightroom cloud - sort pictures in folders

Hi,

I'm new to Lightroom, but did use other tools before (started with Aperture).

I try to sort my pictures that are saved to folders. This does not work with Lightroom cloud (v8.4) on my MacOS (v15.5). The Lightroom Classic (v14.4) seem to only allow this in collections.

My steps:

- save pictures to filesystem in folders e.g. Pictures-2025-07

- open the folder in Lightroom Cloud

- hold one picture (somewhere, e.g. in the middle) with the mouse and move it between the first and the second picture; release the mouse press

- picture does not move; sort options only include (picture date, import date, change date, filename, stars)

Is there an easy way to work on a folder structure, sort the pictures manually the way it should be and then export them in this sorting? What I need is at the end pictures renamed with _01-_99 (which does work good on the chosen sort order).

Thank you for your help if this feature does exist or tipps how to solve my workflow challenge.

Hi @Malt70, Welcome to the Lightroom Community forums! Lightroom CC currently does not support manual drag-and-drop sorting in folders. However, you can achieve this by creating an Album instead. Albums allow custom sort order (via drag-and-drop) on the web or mobile apps, which is preserved across devices.

If you need to export photos in that custom order with sequential filenames (e.g., _01, _02, etc.), manually sort the images, and use the Export dialog with a renaming preset to apply the desired filename sequence. Let me know if that answers your question or if you need additional help troubleshooting. I hope this helps! ^CH

Lightroom cloud does not store pictures in folders. What is called a 'folder' in Lightroom is actually a set to organize albums, not individual pictures.

Thank you Johan,

I try to describe it better. I have my pictures saved to a local folder. I open Lightroom (LR, not LRC), and browse not "cloud" but "local". And there is a folder structure that is showed and I browse.

My issue is: I cannot SORT those pictures to export it in the peoper order.

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.
