Question

Lightroom Desktop 9.6: Top toolbar becomes too tall in Full Screen and clips the content below

Can any one please help with this fullscreen issue that I am having?

Description

I have identified what appears to be the cause of a Full Screen UI problem in Lightroom Desktop 9.6 on macOS.

When switching between normal windowed mode and Full Screen mode, Lightroom's top toolbar/header changes height.

This is the horizontal toolbar running across the top of the Lightroom window. It contains the Photos button/navigation control, Search All Photos, Notifications bell, Share, Help and Cloud status.

In Full Screen mode, this toolbar becomes noticeably taller than it is in normal windowed mode.

The content below the toolbar does not appear to be correctly repositioned to account for the increased toolbar height.

As a result, the top of the photograph is cut off, and the top of the Histogram is also clipped - no try much but it is an annoyance!

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open Lightroom Desktop 9.6 on macOS.
  2. Open a photograph in the Edit view.
  3. Observe the height of the top toolbar in normal windowed mode.
  4. Switch Lightroom to Full Screen mode.
  5. Observe that the top toolbar becomes taller.
  6. Observe the photograph and Histogram below the toolbar.

Expected behaviour

The top toolbar should maintain the correct height when switching between normal and Full Screen modes, or Lightroom should correctly reposition the content below it when the toolbar height changes.

The complete photograph and editing interface should remain visible.

Actual behaviour

When switching to Full Screen mode, the top toolbar becomes taller.

The increased height of the toolbar appears to cause the content below it to be positioned incorrectly.

This results in:

  • The top of the photograph being cut off.
  • The top of the Histogram being cut off.
  • The editing area being positioned too high relative to the toolbar.

Switching back to normal windowed mode causes the toolbar to return to its previous height and the problem changes accordingly.

Troubleshooting performed

I have already:

  • Restarted Lightroom.
  • Restarted the Mac.
  • Exited and re-entered Full Screen.
  • Tried Lightroom's available Full Screen options.
  • Changed macOS display scaling.
  • Checked relevant macOS display and Full Screen settings.
  • Completely reinstalled Lightroom using a fresh download directly from Adobe.

The issue persists.

Fast User Switching is not involved.

Version

Lightroom Desktop 9.6

Platform

macOS

Additional information

The important observation is that the top toolbar itself changes height when switching between normal windowed mode and Full Screen mode.

The clipping of the photograph and Histogram appears to correspond to this change in toolbar height.

This appears to be an issue with Lightroom's own UI layout when changing screen modes, rather than a problem with the photograph, Histogram, macOS display scaling or the Lightroom installation.

I have provided screenshots showing the difference in toolbar height between normal and Full Screen modes.

Reverting to version 9.4.1 fixes the problem; any later release keeps it in place.

Hey, @Mystic_Flamingo0D4B. Welcome to the Lightroom Community. I'll help you figure this out.

I couldn't reproduce this on my macOS machine. I am on macOS 27.0.1. What version of macOS do you see this on?

Could you record a short video and also provide any specific edit conditions that trigger the behavior?

Thanks!

@Sameer K Thank you for looking into this.

I am running macOS 27.0.1 also.

I have attached a video showing what it is doing.

No specific behaviour triggers it apart from going fullscreen.
