Question

Lightroom Desktop incorrectly compresses images when exporting. "Original" export does not preserve the original file, and "Large JPEG" export has significantly reduced quality. Mobile exports work correctly.

Hello Adobe Support,

I am experiencing an issue with Lightroom Desktop when exporting photos, and I would appreciate your assistance.

The problem only occurs in the desktop version of Lightroom. Whenever I export an image using either the Original or Large JPEG export option, the exported file has noticeably reduced quality and does not match the original image.

In addition, every time I export, Lightroom displays the following warning:

"Warning: Some images may not be exported at the size you requested because we couldn't access the full-size original."

This happens even though the original photos should be available.

What is confusing is that the Lightroom mobile app works perfectly. Using the same photos, I can export both Original and Large JPEG versions without any quality loss or unexpected compression. The issue is only present on Lightroom Desktop.

Because of the warning message, I suspect Lightroom Desktop is somehow unable to access the full-resolution originals, even though they are available and the mobile application has no problem exporting them.

Could you please help me determine why Lightroom Desktop cannot access the full-size originals and why it exports lower-quality files instead? I can provide screenshots of the warning message, my export settings, and sample files if needed.

Thank you for your assistance.

Kind regards,

Hey, @bugrayigit. Thanks for bringing this up. We're already investigating this issue internally due to frequent reports.

We request you to export a few images as Originals & DNG and share the sample images with us. You can upload the sample images to any cloud file-sharing service and share the direct link with me here or via direct messages.

    Thanks!

    Hi @Sameer K ,

    Thank you for your response.

I've attached two screenshots that demonstrate the issue I'm experiencing.

    • Screenshot 1:Exporting as Original. The same warning appears, and Lightroom does not export the actual original file.
    • Screenshot 2: Exporting as Large JPEG. Lightroom displays the warning: "Some images may not be exported at the size you requested because we couldn't access the full-size original." The exported JPEG is also noticeably compressed and much smaller than expected.

I also noticed another important issue:

    • My original RAW file is a CR2 file with a size of 15.33 MB.
    • When I choose Original export on Lightroom Desktop, it exports a DNG file instead of the original CR2, and the exported file is only 1.54 MB.
    • However, when I perform the same Original export on the Lightroom Mobile app, it correctly exports the original CR2 file without any issues.

The same difference exists with Large JPEG exports:

    • Lightroom Mobile: approximately 3.5 MB.
    • Lightroom Desktop: only 1.27 MB, with noticeably reduced image quality.

Based on these results, it seems that Lightroom Desktop is unable to access the full-resolution original, even though Lightroom Mobile can access and export it correctly.

I will upload the requested sample Original and DNG files to a cloud storage service and share the download link with you as soon as possible.

Thank you for your help and for investigating this issue.

Hey, @FabioSchramm. Welcome to the Lightroom Community. I'll need more info to help you figure this out. Please share a video showing your development operation, along with an image & the system info from Lightroom: Help > System info > Copy and paste into a text document > Upload and attach here.

Does this happen with a specific set of images with specific edits? Were these images imported into Lightroom on the same device or via another surface with Lightroom?

Check if export works with Lightroom Web (https://adobe.ly/4exBz9y)

Try moving the images to a new Test album.

    - Right-click on the Test Album name > Select 'Make Album Available Offline' & try exporting a few images.

Let me know how it goes.

    Thanks!

    @Sameer K
