Question

Lightroom Desktop silently fails to export 13,000 originals; 5,500 succeeds

I am using Lightroom Desktop (cloud-based) on macOS 26.6 (Apple silicon).

Goal
Create a local backup of the original RAW files for approximately 13,000 cloud photos.

Steps to reproduce
1. Select approximately 13,000 photos in Lightroom Desktop.
2. Choose Export.
3. Select Original (the RAW originals) as the file type.
4. Choose the destination and start the export.

Expected result
The export starts and Lightroom shows visible progress. If this number of files is not supported, Lightroom should show a clear limit or error message.

Actual result
After clicking Export, Lightroom becomes silent. No export progress appears, no error is shown, and the process seems to be aborted.

Control test
I reduced the selection to approximately 5,500 photos and repeated the export with the same settings. That export succeeds. This suggests a size-related limit or failure somewhere between 5,500 and 13,000 files. I could not find a documented maximum for Lightroom Desktop exports.

Impact
I cannot reliably create a complete local backup of my cloud originals. The silent failure also makes it unclear whether the backup has started or completed.

Please confirm whether there is a supported maximum number of files per export and improve the progress/error handling for large exports.

Thank you for your reply. I look forward to your private message. I am currently travelling, so I will only be able to send the diagnostic logs from 7 August onwards.

There’s no maximum number; this should work. The team would like to get a diagnostic log from you. We’ll reach out privately with details.

Thanks for your reply. All originals are already stored locally and my MacBook has 8 TB of storage. Exporting 5,500 images works normally and quickly, but with 13,000 images nothing happens after clicking Export.

Since Lightroom does not show any warning that the selection is too large, this still appears to be a bug. Is there a log file I can provide to help investigate this?

Hey, @Alex Pansier. Welcome to the Lightroom Community. I've moved your post to the Questions for now. I'll clarify this for you.

For Lightroom desktop to export as Originals, the originals have to be downloaded locally. While there isn't a set upper limit, there are thresholds such as total RAM & available storage. Have you tried using the Archive functionality (underrated, in my opinion) instead of exporting as originals? https://adobe.ly/4510Qn9

What would be the total storage size for the 13000 images? Were these images in separate albums? If yes, how many albums (ballpark)? For now, exporting in smaller batches and then comparing the total number of downloaded assets with Lightroom desktop is a practical workaround.

    Thanks!
