Lightroom for Android not uploading unless a photo is edited or added to an album

I've been using Lightroom on my phone for years and I have just noticed that since the start of this year, the only photos in the cloud for 2024 (and therefore accessible on the web or on my laptop) are those that I have actively edited or added to an album. Most photos on my device, even if they are in my Lightroom library in Android, don't even have a manual upload to cloud option on them. But if I just click the 'edit' button and then close them again, they are uploaded. This is really irritating behaviour - I want all my photos to sync to the cloud automatically like they used to. If I hadn't noticed, I may have purged a load of photos  from my device to free up space and lost them forever. Is this a bug or is this now happening by design?
