Lightroom for iPad direct import fails with large number of files

I recently tried to import photos from a camera sd card with roughly 2k raw files (no jpg) and found that lightroom for iPad failed to even load the previews on the import screen. Instead it displayed a loading spinner indenfinitely (waited >20 mins). 

I tried the same setup on my iPhone and it worked, instantly showing the previews and allowing me to select items.
