Question

Lightroom for Windows requires an excessive amount of storage for importing photos

Lightroom for Windows requires an excessive amount of storage for import photos to a library and backup to cloud; roughly twice the size of total of all files imported. I would expect a nominal amount of extra storage to perhaps be required (ie. MAYBE one photo worth), but instead, about 2 times the total size of all imported files is required. I can't imagine any reason such an egregiously large amount of additional amount of storage should be required to import photos, therefore I am reporting this as a bug.

I have searched several times for other posts or any kind of information about similar issues, but can't seem to find any information on how to remedy this issue (apart from removing all local caching, which I have already done), so I am creating a new post. See below for details of this issue.

Version: 5.5 on Windows 10 (but also every Lightroom CC I've ever tried, which begun early 2022)

Reproduction steps:

  1. Enable cloud backup and disable all local caching settings in lightroom.
  2. Drag and drop some photos from file explorer into lightroom to import them.

Expected outcome:

A nominal amount of extra storage is required for photos to be imported (ie. about one photo's worth) while photos are uploaded to cloud. Perhaps a smaller nominal amount remains permanently for library information.

Observed outcome:
About twice the size of the imported files is required in storage. If less storage is available, then some files are not imported. For example: if 1GB of photos is imported, then 2GB of additional storage is required on disk. If each file is 50MB and there is only 1.8GB of storage available, then 2 photos will not be successfully imported with an error indicating not enough storage available. After cloud sync is completed, storage usage goes back down to the expected nominal amount for library information.

Hi there, I'd love to clarify this for you.

What you are experiencing is expected & by design.

Lightroom temporarily occupies equal & more storage to the images you import. Adding to your findings, a copy of the full-size image is made in Lightroom's database & it is further uploaded to the cloud.

This behavior helps ensure the images are synced up correctly & stored within Lightroom until the sync is complete, even if the source is no longer available.

Once the upload is completed, you can choose to or set Lightroom to clear up the local caches as you have.

Thanks!

Hi Sameer,

Thank you for the information.

Based on your response, I take it there is no way to modify or avoid this behavior then?

I wonder: what if I were to I disable cloud sync, import photos, then enable sync - would the same storage still be used on import, or when sync is re-enabled?

Thanks,
Nick
