Question

Lightroom iPad - Folder structure visible but images won’t load (local-only 70GB catalog)

Hi,

I’m experiencing a persistent issue with Lightroom on my iPad and would appreciate help from the community or an Adobe engineer.

Setup:

  • iPad with M1 chip, iPadOS (latest)
  • Lightroom mobile, latest version
  • 70 GB local-only catalog — photos were never synced to Adobe cloud
  • ~40 GB free storage on iPad

The issue:

Lightroom loads and shows my complete folder structure with correct image counts, but the images themselves never load. The right panel is completely blank with a permanent loading circle regardless of how long I wait (tested over an hour). Tapping into individual folders makes no difference. Local storage in settings shows “calculating…” indefinitely.

What I’ve tried:

  • Full delete and clean reinstall of the app
  • Deleting Managed Catalog.mcat-shm, .mcat-wal via iMazing
  • Deleting Managed Catalog.wfindex and its WAL/SHM files
  • Deleting the blobs folder
  • SQLite3 integrity check on .mcat → ok
  • SQLite3 WAL checkpoint → 0|0|0 (clean)
  • Testing in airplane mode
  • Logging out and back into Adobe account

The database appears intact. Photos are confirmed present in the Originals folder. The catalog is local-only so cloud sync is not involved.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello @Aurel_Arnold

@Rob_Cullen is right that Lightroom Mobile is designed with cloud sync in mind.  However, we support many active users who use the free version of the app which cannot sync.  In theory, this should be similar to your experience where sync is not occurring.  The difference is that free users can still fetch needed camera and lens profiles from Lightroom’s server, as well as image processing models that are used by some features.

..What I am wondering is: what kinds of images have you imported that are not visible?  In my mind, it’s possible your device needs to download camera and/or lens profiles to render the images.  Lightroom relies on embedded Adobe Camera Raw technology to render raw images, and ACR relies on those profiles I just mentioned.

    Some ideas I recommend exploring:

    • Have you updated the app to the latest version released last week 11.2.1?
    • Instead of letting your local catalog fully sync, could you try hopping online for just a minute, unpausing sync, so that the app can download any needed resources from the server?
    • Your screen shot makes it seem like your device is online, and LR’s cloud does not seem to be in a paused state.  A teammate wondered if it might help if you set your network offline (ie., Airplane Mode, or WiFi = Off, to help the LR app avoid any confusion it may have about network availability)

If these ideas don’t help, we’d be interested to getting a diagnostic log from you.  Please let us know how it goes, so we can determine next steps, if needed.

    Kind regards to you both!

Hi Charlie, thank you so much for the detailed response and for looping in the team!

I’m already on version 11.2.1 since my reinstallation. I also already tested both with WiFi and in airplane mode without any change in behavior.

Regarding sync, I’m actually unable to pause or unpause it, the button doesn’t react when I try to interact with it.

I would be very happy to share a diagnostic log and would love to know how to generate and provide it to you.

    Thanks again for your help!

Lightroom on iPad does not have a formal "Local Mode" tab like the desktop version [Lr] to work without cloud syncing, but it does allow you to work entirely with local files by storing original images directly on the device. You can edit offline, but the app is designed to sync, and it creates local cached copies to manage storage, often replacing originals with smart previews to save space.
Meaning you need to import the images to the Cloud first, then keep a local cached copy in iPad storage.
Only the PC/Mac version (Lightroom-Desktop) has a ‘Local’ mode for all local images that have not been imported to the Adobe Cloud.

Thanks for the response. I’m aware there’s no official offline mode, but I’ve been using Lightroom this way for the past 3 years by pausing cloud synchronisation — and it worked seamlessly the entire time. The photos are confirmed to be physically present in the Originals folder when browsing the iPad’s file system from a MacBook, so the issue is specifically that Lightroom can see the folder structure and image counts but won’t render the actual images. I’m looking for help understanding why the app can read the database but not display the images.

Keep your question active until you get a reply from someone more knowledgeable than me. Sounds as though you would like a ‘Local mode’ exactly like the Lr-Desktop version. An ‘Idea’  rather than a ‘question’.
