Lightroom latest update 4.1 not working well on mojave 10.14... anyone else?

I am getting strange crashes of the software on my mac pro late 2013 computer... running macOS mojave 10.14.6

the spinning wheel shows up when trying to crop and three or so red rectangles appear in the menu bar over app icons on the right side at the top of the screen and I can't force quit or command tab over to other applications...

anyone have tips?

I'm also getting a constant spinning wheel when trying to crop. using Lightroom on Chrome browser.
