Lightroom shows photos in the grid and filmstrip but does not display individual photos for editing.

Hi - I just downloaded Lightroom and Lightroom classic on my new Surface Pro 7.  In Lightroom (not classic), my photos will display in the grid format and in the filmstrip - but if I select an image it will either display very briefly and disappear, or not display at al.  Thoughts on how to correct?
