Lightroom takes a long time to load photo previews when importing from SD card's root folder

Issue: Lightroom takes a long time to load photo previews when selecting the SD card root folder as the source, but loads quickly when selecting the DCIM subfolder.

Lightroom Version: 7.5

OS and Version: Windows 11 (23H2)

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior:

  1. Insert an SD card into the computer via an SD card reader.
  2. Open Adobe Lightroom and select the SD card root folder as the source for importing photos.
  3. Wait for Lightroom to load the preview view. Notice that photos load one by one very slowly.
  4. Close the import view and repeat the steps, but this time select the subfolder (DCIM) on the SD card where the photos are stored as the source.
  5. Observe that the preview view loads very quickly.

Expected Result: The photo preview view should load quickly regardless of whether the SD card root folder or the DCIM subfolder is selected as the source.

Actual Result: The photo preview view loads slowly when the SD card root folder is selected but loads quickly when the DCIM subfolder is selected.

I am unable to reproduce this.  Step 3 is fast regardless of whether I choose the SD Card (Device) or Navigate to it using Browse to (DCIM or Root).  The Preview Page is full instantly.

Hi Rikk, did you try to reproduce this on Mac or Windows? It works fine on my Mac but is constantly slow on Windows (tried on two different machines).

On Windows, I see no difference between selecting the SD Card's root folder and the DCIM folder. The full screen is populated in under a second both times.

If I chose Device in the [Add Photos] dialog, instead of browsing to folders, it is a little slower but takes less than 2 seconds to fill the screen.

This is a 2016 Win 10 Machine I am testing on.

7.5 is out of date. Please download 8.0 and advise if you see the same issue.

Thanks!

Hi Rikk,

I just updated to v8.0 and I can confirm that the issue persists.

Thank you,

Chris
