lightroom to photoshop layers

hi yall

I'm trying to reopen a file that has layers from LR. PS would previously open up and my layers would be intact but now the images are opening up flattened. I've read a few forums that say choose "edit original" but the only option LR gives me is Open in Photoshop.

I am working on Adobe Lightroom, not classic, and Photoshop CC 2021, both up to date. I haven't seen anyone specify but wanted to add this info just in case.

I had no trouble before using command +shift+ E to open up the files in PS with layers, and I haven't changed any settings. I'm stumped.
