LR iPad stopped showing edited pics in the Device album

Previously after editing a picture when I went back to the album in Lightroom it would show two fingernails. One had a download arrow and the other one had a pencil. I discovered that the one with the pencil has always been the original and so I deleted those. Now, After editing pictures it is only showing the one with the pencil. When I tap on that it does open up with my edits. If I tell it to save to device it still does not show up with the download arrow.  I can't find the originals to delete any longer. I have looked on the device as well as in the Lightroom albums that are showing. 

As a secondary question, I am an amateur so don't need the originals after they are edited. Is there no way to simply overwrite the original?
