    That’s a big question. There’s a few notable differences:

    • Where the files are stored
      • Lightroom - in the cloud so they’re accessible on all devices, or in a normal folder on your hard drive and viewed as a file browser.
      • Lightroom Classic - on your hard drive, but catalogued so you can still view them when the hard drive is disconnected.
    • Complexity
      • Lightroom has a much more intuitive interfaces, whereas there’s quite a learning curve with Lightroom Classic.
      • Lightroom Classic has more years of history, so it has some advanced features that Lightroom doesn’t (such as more advanced filtering)
      • The editing tools are essentially identical across both, with some very advanced features like Soft Proofing available in Lightroom Classic.
    • Automation
      • Lightroom is more focused on the latest technologies, so it can do things like search for your photos based on your description, whereas Lightroom Classic relies on you manually keywording photos.

There’s way more to it than that, but if you tell us a bit more about yourself and what you’re looking for, what kind of photography you do, etc. then we can guide you further.

If you’re just getting started, Lightroom is the way to go, but it’s a bit more nuanced if you’ve used older Lightroom versions.
