Missing photos on Lightroom

I'm filing a complaint on behalf of a friend and colleague who claims that the last time she rebooted her laptop, all of the photographs, including the presets in Lightroom, vanished. All of the photographs returned when she plugged in her SD card in the first time this happened, but this time, they didn't.

We will need more information. First of all, we need to know what version of Lightroom she is using; Lightroom Classic or Lightroom and also what OS (MacOS/Windows). If she is using Lightroom Classic, then this sounds like Lightroom Classic created a new catalog instead of opening the existing one. Catalogs cannot be stored on or used from an SD card however, so it's unclear how the SD card could play a part. Lightroom (non-Classic) stores its catalog and the images in the cloud, so with this app the SD card should also play no role. Is it really an SD card or might it be another type, like CFExpress? And wouldn't it make more sense if she came to this forum herself?
