Open as Smart Object LR Desktop 8.1 and Photoshop Beta 26.3.0 Not Working

Bug Report:

Software and System Details:
  • Adobe Lightroom Desktop: Version 8.1 (non-Classic)
  • Adobe Photoshop: Beta 26.3.0
  • Operating System: Windows 11
  • Hardware: Snapdragon X Elite, 16GB RAM, SSD

Description of the Bug: When attempting to open a photo as a Smart Object from within Lightroom to Photoshop, Photoshop opens, but the image does not load. Subsequently, an error message appears stating that "Photoshop cannot be opened". This issue persists whether Photoshop is already open or closed at the time of the action from Lightroom.

Steps to Reproduce:
  1. Select a photo in Lightroom Desktop.
  2. Right-click on the photo and choose "Edit In" > "Open as Smart Object in Photoshop".
  3. Photoshop opens, but the selected image does not appear.
  4. An error message then displays stating "Photoshop cannot be opened".

Expected Behavior:
  • Photoshop should open with the selected image loaded as a Smart Object.

Actual Behavior:
  • Photoshop opens without loading the image, followed by an error message indicating it cannot be opened.

Error Message:
  • "Photoshop cannot be opened" (No error code provided).

Workaround:
  • By selecting "Open in..." and manually browsing to Photoshop via file explorer, the file can be opened, but it does not load as a Smart Object.

Additional Notes:
  • This suggests there might be a communication or compatibility issue between Lightroom and Photoshop when passing the image data specifically for Smart Object functionality on this system configuration.
  • The issue might be related to the ARM architecture of the Snapdragon X Elite processor, considering Adobe's native support for Windows on ARM is still developing.

System Information:
  • The system uses an SSD for storage, which should not impact this specific issue but is noted for context.
  • The 16GB RAM should be sufficient for these operations unless there's an unusual memory leak or usage pattern with this software combination on ARM architecture.

Recommendations for Further Investigation:
  • Check if there are any specific updates or patches for Lightroom or Photoshop that address ARM architecture issues.
  • Verify if this issue occurs with other file types or only with certain image formats.
  • Consider if there are any system-level permissions or settings that might interfere with inter-application communication on Windows 11 with ARM processors.

This report should provide Adobe support with a clear picture of the problem you're experiencing, facilitating a more targeted investigation into the cause. Remember to include any screenshots of the error if possible when you submit this report to Adobe.

I cannot reproduce this on my production Windows system.

This behavior is typical of systems running more than one version of PS—especially when you've recently uninstalled a version and especially when one of the remaining installs is a Beta version.

The recommendation is to remove all versions of Photoshop from your computer and reinstall only the latest Production version. If that doesn't remedy the issue, then a reset of Photoshop's preferences is likely.
