P: Lr Desktop 9.2 Photo Renaming Adds Suffix for Mixed Extensions (DNG + JPG)

When I use the “Photo Renaming” function in Lightroom 9.2 (this actually happened in the previous release as well) LR would struggle with file extensions.

For example: If I select .DNG and its corresponding .JPG and then rename them using “YY-MM FILENAME” it would show in the Preview ““YY-MM FILENAME.DNG”. However when executed it would update the DNG to “YY-MM FILENAME.DNG” while the JPG would be named “YY-MM FILENAME-2.JPG”. This happens consistently when selecting multiple photos with identical filenames but separate file extensions, no matter if stored in the Adobe Cloud or locally. This would not happen in LrC 15.2!

@thephotochroma @Photochroma

Thank you for your patience and for following up.

I checked with the product team again regarding this behavior. Their current assessment is that this is working as designed, rather than being treated as a product bug.

The reasoning is that when two files share the same base filename, for example:

  • IMG_0001.DNG
  • IMG_0001.JPG

Lightroom also has to account for the associated XMP sidecar naming. Without differentiating the filenames, both files would map to the same sidecar filename (IMG_0001.xmp), creating a naming conflict. To avoid that, Lightroom Desktop appends -2 to the second renamed file, resulting in:

  • YY-MM FILENAME.DNG
  • YY-MM FILENAME-2.JPG

So, while the file extensions differ, the suffix is intentionally added to prevent XMP filename collisions.

I understand this differs from Lightroom Classic’s behavior and can be unexpected if you’re accustomed to that workflow. I appreciate you taking the time to report it and follow up on it.

Hey @Photochroma ,

This behaviour is as per design.

When two files share the same base name, like IMG_0001.DNG and IMG_0001.JPG, Lightroom also has to account for their XMP sidecar naming. Both of those files would map to the same sidecar name, IMG_0001.xmp. To prevent that collision, Lightroom appends -2 to the second renamed file, which is why you see YY-MM IMG_0001-2.JPG.

So while the extensions are different, the suffix is added intentionally to avoid an XMP filename conflict.

Not sure if this assessment is correct. There have always been RAW + JPG pairs or tandem files. LrC handles them without issues and renaming. LR did so as well in previous versions,

Hey @Photochroma, Thank you for sharing the details about the issue you're seeing when exporting images from Lightroom. Could you confirm which export settings you're using? I tested exporting two images using the File Naming: Date – Filename setting and the export completed successfully in Lightroom 9.2.

To help us test the issue out on our end please send screen shoot of your export window and sample files would be helpful to test on our end.

Hi, I am not exporting. I am changing the filename (Menu: Photos/Rename Photos). Where should I upload sample files?

Hi @Photochroma,

Apologies for the delayed response. I was able to reproduce the exact behavior you’re describing with mixed extensions (.DNG + .JPG) during Photo Renaming in Lightroom 9.2.

I’m going to check this with the product team. I’ll update this thread once I have clarity from engineering.

Thanks for flagging this.

Regards,

Anshul Saini

Do not know why this appeared in “Questions”, should have ended up in “Bugs” ...
