Photos Greyed out from External Hard Drive

Hi, I am trying to import photos from EHD to work on in LR.  Some of my folders show the photos normally, in thumbnails, but some folders are showing grayed out photos.  I have tried it on my partners laptop and all is well.  We both have MacBook Air and we both have Seagate EHD.   I think it could be that I have got different settings (maybe).  If anyone can throw some light on this, I will be extremely grateful.  Easy steps would be good, I'm still a beginner with LR.
