Problems Importing images into lightroom from external hard drive

Every time I import images from an extermal hard drive in to Lightroom the computer goes into a freeze, restarts it's self and reopens in a previous folder.   I am on a Mac, using Catlina.

Spent more than an hour on hold before speaking to a representative.   Did Not fix the problem.

Any thoughs.     Very disappointed with the Cloud!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
