When I'm editing in lightroom I change my profile to what I want, the edit in photoshop,  hit save and images us back in lightroom,  bit my profile change to color when I first set it to modern.  Why is that? The images don't seem to be different.

When you send a raw image to Photoshop, the raw-profile you have chosen is applied and 'baked into the pixels' of the TIFF or PSD file that is created. When that TIFF or PSD image returns to Lightroom, it's a new file for Lightroom which will get the standard 'Color' profile that RGB images always get.

You probably started working with a raw image in Lightroom and sent that raw image to Photoshop. Raw images have a much more diverse selection of profiles. The image that is returned from Photoshop is NOT a raw image, and the profiles that are available are much more limited.
