Radial Gradient: mask won't disappear while editing

Help! I'm able to create a radial gradient, but am only able to make an edit while the mask is showing, preventing me from seeing what's actually happening during the edit. Only way I'm able to see the result is to click onto another tool (in order for the mask to disappear). To edit again, I then need to click the radial gradient tool, the center of the gradient point itself (at which time the mask appears again), and continue editing.

How the heck are you able to see the adjustments live without the darn mask visible?
