Radial mask scales when moving after rotation (Lightroom Desktop 9.3)

After rotating a radial mask (~25° or more), moving the mask causes it to increase in size with each drag. Translation appears to trigger scaling, making the mask impossible to control.

Occurs on macOS using a trackpad (Lightroom Desktop 9.2 and 9.3). Works correctly in version 8.5.1 and in the web version, so this appears to be a regression introduced after 8.5.1.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open an image in Lightroom Desktop (macOS)
  2. Create a Radial Gradient mask
  3. Adjust size/position – works normally
  4. Rotate the mask slightly – still works
  5. Rotate further (~25° or more)
  6. Drag the mask to reposition it

Result:

  • The mask increases in size while dragging (scales instead of just moving)

Expected:

  • Dragging should only move (translate) the mask, regardless of rotation

I initially reproduced the issue consistently in Lightroom Desktop 9.3. I then downgraded to 8.5.1 to continue working, where the issue did not occur.

To verify, I upgraded back to 9.3, and the issue returned. I downgraded again to 8.5.1 so I could finish my work.

However, after upgrading to 9.3 just now to make a video, I can no longer reproduce the issue. Same system, same input method: Mac with trackpad.

If the issue appears again I will record a video.

Systems info attached.

I finally managed to capture a screen recording that reproduces the issue, see attached video.

I am not able to consistently reproduce the issue, and I have not identified exactly what triggers it. The recording shows the problem occurring when moving a rotated radial mask. Instead of only changing position, the mask also scales unexpectedly.

Drives me nuts ...

Yet another recording where the issue triggers on the first attempt. System info is also included.

Hey @raonnypix ,

We’ve consolidated everything into one thread to keep the conversation in one place, and moved it to “Questions” while we work to reproduce this on our end.

Really appreciate you taking the time to share the detailed steps, that’s super helpful. When you get a chance, could you share your system info? That should give us a bit more context to help pinpoint what’s going on. You can find this by going to Help > System Info while in Lightroom. Copy and paste that into a text file and attach if to your response.

If you’re able, screenshots or a quick screen recording of the issue would also help a ton. Thanks for working through this with us, we’ll keep you posted as we dig in.

Hey @raonnypix

Thank you for sharing your system information and the update. That’s helpful to know. It’s possible the issue may have been related to the installed version or a temporary conflict during installation. We’ll keep an eye out for any updates from you if the problem returns.

Were you ever seeing this issue with high resoluton files (60+ MP)? Sounds a lot like this: https://community.adobe.com/bug-reports-679/p-linear-gradients-now-slowly-rotate-while-resizing-windows-662260

Do anyone else experience the same issue?
Is there a workaround?
