Question

Save image fro Lightroom Mobile v9.1 to iPhone device reduces resolution

I have a photo in LrM that is 5921 x 4737 px, but when I use the Share/Save copy to device to saveImage and view the image Info on my iPhone 13 Photos it's reduced to 1836 x 1469 px. I get the same size when I select Export As and Dimension/Largest available dimensions.

I get the same reduced size when I export to OneDrive as well so this is not specific to exporting to iOS photos.

The only way I can get the full resolutions of the image I see in LrC/LrM is when I use Export As and Dimension/Custom, set it to Long side 5921 px, and choose Save image. Then I get the full-sized image of 5921 x 4737 px.

Why isn't the option Largest available dimensions using 5921 px instead of 1836 px? This is not going to work for my LrM workflow to do a Custom export using the longest dimension for every photo.

What is the remedy here?

Is it possible that the image in question has been synced to the Adobe cloud from Lightroom Classic? That would explain the problem, as LrC can only upload smart previews of the original files, which are a pre-cropped max resolution of 2560 px on the long edge. That would thus be the largest possible dimension, and it would be less if the image had been cropped. Using the Custom option to specify the size of the original file could be done, but that would involve the output file being significantly up-sized with a potential loss of quality.

To verify the type of image in the cloud (original or smart preview), select the image in question then tap on the cloud icon.....that will tell you the type of file stored locally and in the cloud. If it reports Smart Preview for both "Local" and "Cloud Backup" then that does indeed explain the issue that you are running into.

Another explanation could be that the LrM device is offline, in which case even if the original is stored in the cloud it couldn't be downloaded for the full-res export. It used to be that the export would fail in those circumstances, though I have an idea that there has been a change in that area.
