Question

Scrolling in Lightroom using a trackpad has severe input lag

When using lightroom, scrolling up and down using a trackpad has severe input lag which causes the scrolling inputs to be deleyed by 1s or so. This makes scrolling is very unpredictable, meaning quickly navigating controls on the edit page, scrolling through the library and navigating the thumnail strip becomes extremely tedious and slow. The issue seems to be related to scroll inertia when using the track pad and while I am unable to test it with a mouse, dragging the scroll bar is very responsive.

I am using an M1 Pro MacBook Pro (32GB Ram) and lightroom runs quickly despite this issue so I know it is not performance related. This also appears to be a relatively new issue as I have not had problems with this in the past on this device.

Hey All! We request you to share the diagnostic logs

If you’re using Lightroom Desktop v9.4.

  • Use Lightroom until the problem occurs.
  • Go to Adobe Lightroom > Preferences.
  • In the Preferences dialog, click on the "Account" tab.
  • Hold down the option key (Mac) or alt key (Windows) and then click on "Diagnostic Log (recommended)".
  • In the resulting dialog, click on "Generate Log".
  • After the log is generated, click "Show in Finder/Explorer"
  • Send us the log file by uploading to any cloud file sharing service, and share the link here, or via direct message.

Similarly, if you see this in Lightroom Classic v15.4 / v15.4.1, follow these steps:

  • Use Lightroom Classic until the problem occurs.
  • Go to Lightroom Classic > Preferences > Lightroom Sync
  • In the Lightroom Sync dialog > Hold down the option key (Mac) or alt key (Windows) and then click on "Generate Diagnostic Report’
  • After the log is generated, click "Show in Finder/Explorer"
  • Send us the log file by uploading to any cloud file sharing service, and share the link here, or via direct message.

Thanks!
Sameer K

15.4 - Mac version - Apple Silicon

If I hold down the left or right arrows keys while in Library Module and I hold a touch too long (only like 1 second) it will scroll uncontrollably in that direction and it’s hard to get it to stop. (my shoots are large and it can easily scroll many hundreds of photos before I can get it to stop)

This is a new behavior and did not do this in recent versions. (I believe there was a time years ago that this happened.)

It does not happen in Develop Mode.

The same is happening for me, on a 13” macbook pro M1 from 2021. Latest lightroom and OS updates, and i have also been experiencing this for 6 months or so. I made a video, where can i send it? I would rather it not be public.

To clarify a couple things. The issue is in Lightroom classic, and is when you scroll the left panel where you have folders, collections etc. The scrolling in the other panels is fine.

Hi @Lojt,

Thanks for offering to provide the video. You can click my profile picture, then click the “Send Message” button under my name to send me a private DM.

For the video itself, please upload it to Google Drive, Dropbox, WeTransfer, or a similar file-sharing service and then send me the download link privately.

Thank you for clarifying that. This is Lightroom Classic, and the issue is specifically in the left panel (Folders/Collections area), not the other panels, which scroll normally.

That level of detail is very helpful.

Once I receive the video, I’ll share it with the product team so they can see a real-world example of the behavior and better understand its impact on your workflow. Since several users with M1, M3, and M4 MacBooks are now reporting very similar symptoms, having an actual recording will be extremely valuable for the investigation.

Thanks again for taking the time to document this.

Best,
Anshul Saini

ok, here you go, i’m running a Macbook Pro with M4 chip (most powerful chip) on Tahoe 26.4.1 (most recent update) with Lightroom 9.3.1 (most updated version) and have the same issue. it’s awful. just when you think the scroll is about to stop, it keeps going for one little bit - so just when your mouse is over the bar you want to select, it gets messed up just enough to select the wrong thing. it’s so awesome.

exact steps needed to replicate the problem -

  1. open lightroom
  2. edit a few pictures for a while
  3. it starts happening.

how about that? closed all my background tabs too. the computer isn’t hot. for some ungodly reason Lightroom is using 21 of 24gb of my RAM though...

@Sameer K, This description is my exact experience as well. Similarly, I have plenty of performance available on my M3 Pro MacBook Pro - it is a software issue that needs addressed. Editing for photos for more than just a few minutes will considerably slow down the user interface exactly as described by this user.

Hey, @thermogod & @Zack Simpson. I have a similar MBP with M3-Pro (18gb) and I’ve still been unable to recreate this as described.
Try this:

  1. Pause Sync while you’re Editing in Lightroom and resume once you’re done editing and let Lightroom finish syncing.
  2. Go to Lightroom > Preferences > Interface > uncheck the boxes for ‘Enable Animated Hover tips’ and ‘Feature tutorials & intros’.
  3. Record a full length video when you notice to help me clock the duration of how long should we be attempting to recreate this, also, specify the file types you’re working on.

Thanks!

I experience the same issue on my M3 MacBook Pro (18GB ram). RAM doesn’t appear to be the bottleneck and it appears to be a software related issue. I’ve been experiencing this for about 6 months now.

Hey, @Zack Simpson. Thanks for the comment.

I've tried to recreate this and couldn't get it to behave as reported. Also, please test and confirm whether the issue occurs with a specific set of steps. Please share a video & screenshots of the workflow and the system info from Lightroom Help > System info > Copy and paste into a text document > Upload and attach here.

Thanks!

Hi @odoug4, Welcome to the Lightroom Community forum! To better help you with this issue, we would like a few more details. Can you send your system info and a numbered list of the exact steps needed to replicate it? You can find your system info by going to Help > System Info, copying and pasting it into a text file, and attaching it here.

In the meantime, you can try resetting your Lightroom Preferences: https://adobe.ly/4o7JADQ

Once we receive your system information, we can continue troubleshooting the issue. I hope this helps! ^CH
