Question

Select subject under masking tools crashes Lightroom mobile on Samsung Tab Active 3

I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 3 and have installed the latest Lightroom update new mask tool.  When I select mask click on the + then press select either Sky or subject it says detecting subject then refining results, the circle gets to around 3/4 of the way round and then the photo crashes lightroom.  It has only worked once in detecting the subject, every other time Lightroom crashes.  I have also uninstalled lightroom and reinstalled and it still does the same. The other mask features work fine.

I am thinking it is a bug - please can anyone help?

The latest version appears to solve this issue (kinda, by leveraging cloud processing), and indirectly gives an explanation. From the changelog:

"Server-side masking: All users can take advantage of subject & sky masking in the cloud, no matter the device (e.g. devices with less than 6GB of RAM)."

Would have been nice to know the amount of RAM was the issue...

Does the same on my iPhone 8. The problem seems quite old, could we get a fix? 🙂

Definitely not limited to tablets, happens on my Samsung Galaxy S20 FE too.

I have the same problem with my Samsung Galaxy 9. Everything else works fine, but "select subject" crashes the Lightroom app every time.

Same issue on my Samsung tablet. Had to roll back to a previous version of LR, which loads slowly: I get the "LR isn't responding, close app or wait" message when clicking presets or profiles. But at least doesn't crash. Must be some kind of conflict with tablets as mine is the more powerful Tab S7 Plus with 8GB RAM. Even trying a simple brush mask crashes it.

This is also happening on My Samsung Galaxy Tab S7+5g.

LR Version 7.3.1 (Last Update 1 April 2022)

Tablet Specs:

Model: SM-T976B (gts7xlxeea) UK

Android 12. One UI 4.1

Processor

CPU Speed

3.09GHz, 2.4GHz, 1.8GHz Octa-Core

Memory

RAM_Size - 6GB

ROM Size - 128GB

Ext SD - 32Gb

It was fine for me before the last update. Its happening on both Select Subject & Sky.. about 80% of the time attempted to use these 2 mask options, It closes the image iny workspace and goes back to the Image folders screen and does not save my last edits. I am having to make a successful Edit... back out if the App, force close app from tablet settings, reload app and keep trying to select the Mask.

Its nothing to with having other masks active, as I have tried it both with 5+ active masks from the other options available... and also subject/sky being the 1st mask that I am attempting to add.

It happens on images that have already had edits applied before masking, and also as the 1st edit after import.

Uninstall/Reinstall does not fix. Clear caches etc does not fix, reboot/reset of tablet does not fix! Nothing seems to cure the bug.

Hi,

We're sorry about the trouble with Lightroom mobile. Would you mind telling us the amount of RAM the Samsung Tab Active 3 has? If the Tab has less than 6GB RAM, please check the note in the article: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-cc/using/masking-mobile-android.html

Regards,

Nikunj

Samsung Galaxy Active Tab 3 has 64GB 4GB Ram

My Moto G7 PLUS has 64GB 4GB Ram.

The Sky Subject Mask Tool works on the Moto G7.

If I do changes to Sky or Subject on the Moto G7 then open the photo in Lightroom on the Samsung I can do more changes using Subject or sky such as,  eg exposure.

Strange how it works on Moto and not Samsung running same memory
