The search function is disabled in albums shared with me.

This, unfortunately is standard behaviour..

As I understand, there are blockers on allowing the Metadata to be edited. 
As for the search, I guess most of this would be Cloud Based (the recipient of the link may not have a subscription to allow this), although a basic search for Keywords etc should be able to work.
