The zoom moves sideways and does not align the photo to the center of the screen.

I think you will find that is a symptom of the (new) scrubby zoom feature.

You can drag the mouse cursor on the Navigator preview and move the zoom window about on the Navigator preview image.

You should also be able to click-hold on the image and move it within the screen window (so as not to be off-center)
