Question

There was a problem with checking how much disk space you have free

Using Lightroom v9.3.2 on a Windows 11 Laptop

I’ve just moved to a new laptop and installed Lightroom from the Adobe Creative Cloud.

I am now getting the error “There was a problem with checking how much disk space you have free”  when I try and export a file.

I have plenty of disk space, so not sure what the issue is. I’ve tried the solutions in the forum but none work. One solution is to delete the Users>Pictures>Lightroom Library.lrlibrary file, but I don’t have that on my computer.

When I’m exporting a file, I get the option to select a directory, and in that dialog I can create new directories so Lightroom has permissions to create directories, and, I assume, also files. But still the message appears.

I’m at my wits end - I can’t export anything, so the program is next to useless. Does anyone have any ideas here?

@Sameer K - unfortunately not. Once I removed the files you suggested above did it work again. So, the issue persists unless I use the workaround.

Am I the only person with this issue? The only thing that’s changed for me is that I have a new laptop.

Hey, @Seb98A6. If the issue returns that frequently, it could be related to how the OS and the permissions to folders are set up on your machine. Temporarily disable any antivirus, cloud-back up, or file protection programs on this machine that can interfere with how an app interacts with the device folders.

    Thanks!

a workaround is to select ‘Get a link’ → “allow jpg download and export’
that gives a link you can paste to a browser and from there you can ‘save as’.
Not exactly pretty, but it works.

I do hope there’s a permanent solution to this, it’s incredibly frustrating.

Hey, @Seb98A6. Welcome to the Lightroom Community. I’ll help you figure this out.

What exact version of Lightroom and the operating system are you working on? Is this a personal or work (IT-managed) machine?

Please log in to Lightroom Web (https://lightroom.adobe.com) and verify if everything is synced up to the cloud correctly. You can also use Lightroom Web to export your images.

Once you’re sure everything is synced up to the cloud correctly, follow these steps:

    • Go to the following location

      C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Local\Adobe\Lightroom CC
      or
      Press Windows + R & type in the following - %localappdata%\Adobe\Lightroom CC\Data
    • You'll find a folder inside it with a long cryptic string of numbers and letters (for example: d1a4f88d2b534c7d91022136fd182532). Open that folder.
    • In the folder, delete or move out all the files named Managed Catalog.[anything]. Also, delete the Previews.db file
    • Launch Lightroom.

Let me know if this helps. Thanks!
