Unable to merge HDR

I am having trouble merging to HDR. I wanted to test it as I've never done it before. I am using LrC 10. Here's what's happening. I made two virtual copies of my first edited photo and fiddled with the exposures

1. -1.24

2. 0.24

3. 1.24

Then I selected all 3 of them and clicked Merge to HDR and got a message saying they were unable to be merged. Maybe it's my method? I'm not even sure it can be done this way.

Hi Justin,

Creating an HDR image requires multiple images taken at different exposures. Really take at different exposures, so that you have additional detail in the highlights and/or shadows, that isn't there at all in your base image.

Thanks. Good to know it's not possible the other way.
