Question

Uneditable title field

While copy/pasting titles around between multiple photos, I keep ending up in this situation where the Title field becomes uneditable. Clicking in the space where it should be does nothing. If I quit and restart it comes back, but then happens again before long.

Update: I have confirmed that this is still happening in 8.1, but the good news is that I now have clear steps to reproduce:

  1. With the Info panel open, select several images
  2. Paste the same title into all of them, and hit Enter to apply
  3. Keeping the selection, modify the title and hit Enter to re-apply
  4. The Title field becomes grayed out and stays that way, even after clicking off the selection. It remains disabled until quitting and restarting Lightroom.

OR:

  1. With one image selected, edit the Title and hit Enter to apply
  2. Right-arrow to go to the next image, Enter to apply
  3. Title field becomes permanently disabled

After more experimentation, it seems like what's causing it is simply the act of hitting Enter! If I change titles and don't hit Enter, the changes are still preserved, but the bug is not triggered. But 40 years experience means my muscle memory is to always hit Enter to apply anything. At least I have a workaround now - don't hit Enter after changing Titles!

See screenshot for example of the disabled Title field. I do a lot of batch-titling, so this is hitting my workflow pretty hard.

Note this bug does not exist before 8.0 - I've been habitually hitting Enter in LR titles for years before this bug appeared.

I'm still experiencing this issue in version 8.1.1 on a MacBook Pro.  It's not limited to the Title field; I've also had the same issue with the Caption field.

I think the key to reproducing this issue is typing quickly, especially when mutiple photos are selected.  If I wait a second or two after finishing typing my title/caption, then I don't usually see the issue.  I see the issue more often if I hit Enter immediately after finishing typing.

My workaround is to restart the app each time the issue occurs, but restarting frequently is getting old.

Interesting. Seems like there are so few of us experiencing this, and it's very hard to intentionally reproduce. For what it's worth, I haven't seen it happen for around a month now. Nothing changed about my computer - it just stopped, though it had been happening for months. So weird.

I experienced the bug again, this time with a really weird symptom: A black bar appears on my desktop after I minimize the Lightroom window!

1. Open Lightroom, maximize the window (option + click on green window button)

2. Using Lightroom for a while, experience this "Title field disappears" bug.

3. Observe location of the Title field (right side of screen, a little ways down from the top)

4. Minimize Lightroom (click on yellow window button, or command+M)

5. There's a black bar on my Desktop at the exact same location at the title field was. (see attached screenshot)

6. Select another app (e.g., Finder).  Note that the black bar disappears from Desktop.

7. Repeate steps 3-6.  The black bar comes back and disappears.

8. Restart Lightroom.  The black bar on my Desktop disappears and does not come back when minimizing Lightroom (or at least not immediately; I expect I'll see this bug again).

I'm having the same issue where the title field disappears.  I'm often adding the same title to multiple photos, though I'm not sure if this is required.  It might be a timing issue when typing quickly and hitting Enter?  Restarting Photoshop fixes the problem (and the previously entered title is visible after restarting), but the bug recurs frequently.

typo: in my previous post, I said "Photoshop".  This bug is in Lightroom, not Photoshop

Good news: I finally have steps to reliably reproduce this bug, and have updated the description.

Hi @scot.hacker,

Thanks for reaching out and for sharing the steps to reproduce the issue. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to reproduce it, even following your steps—I'm on Windows, though.

Does this issue only happen in the Title field, or does it also occur in other fields like Caption or Alt Text? Could you share a small video showing the issue?

Thanks a lot!

Alek

Just wanted to let you know I saw your reports that you could not reproduce the issue. I then re-tried my steps above and also could initially not replicate - as if it had been fixed in 8.1 after all. But just now, it happened again, after editing a title and pressing Enter. However, it is no longer reliably reproducible via my steps above. I will continue to look for a reproducible case, but just wanted to reiterate that the problem is still happening sometimes, though now it seems more random.

Note that once it happens, the uneditable Title field is *locked* - I cannot edit any titles on any images until I quit and restart.

I just made it happen again after restarting, by modifying a title and hitting Enter.

Another possibly interesting related tidbit - after this happens, when I return to Mosaic Grid view with the G key, a black bar appears permanently over the screen where the Title field should be - if I put my finger on it and hit "I" to switch to Info mode, it's perfectly aligned with the disabled Title field. As I scroll verticially, the black bar stays fixed in place. Screenshot attached.

This has happened to me three times tonight alone. Quitting and restarting fixes it, but only for a while. I wish I could report a reproducible set of steps, but it seems to happen at random. It's incredibly frustrating.

Hmm, no one else is experiencing this? Titles are super important to me, and this keeps happening in version 8.0.
