Uploading files to LR and getting them into CC not on hard drive

Hello. I suppose I am not using LR correctly but when I import photos off of a memory card directly into LR, they are filling up my hard drive. It continues to say I have no more disk space when I try to upload more. How do I  get them to load into the CC?
