Why can't I import photos to Lightroom?

When I open Lightroom, I am not able to import any photos...the option is grayed out for me under the File menu, and when I click on the '+' on the left, nothing happens. I'm on a Macbook Pro and running the current version of LR btw. Anyone else having this issue?
