Question

Why do mask effects affect the entire photo?

I don't understand why, when I create masks in Lightroom for, let's say, subject and background, I cannot simply click the background mask and make a change, such as clarity, without having said effect applied to the entire photo.

I've created masks for the person and the background.

I then click the desired mask, and change the effects.

These effects apply to the entire photo, not to the mask itself.

Is there something I'm missing?

Can you share a screen capture of the Develop Module right panel group with the mask panel showing?

I suspect you might be using Lightroom-Classic, and-

You are making adjustments in the 'Basic' panel, and not the 'Masking' panel.

Hey @brianlorelle. Welcome to the Lightroom Community. I'll help you figure this out.

What version of Lightroom & the operating system are you working on?

To simplify the process, use the color overlay to highlight the affected/unaffected areas.
In the Masks panel,

  • Enable 'Show Overlay'
  • Click on the three dots to open the Overlay menu > Overlay Settings.

  • Set the Overlay to show Affected areas.

Let me know if this heps. Thanks!
