Why does AI Sharpen reduce image dimensions

I tried the AI Sharpen tool under the Lr Detail edit menu.  I was shocked to find out that rather than actually sharpen the image the tool simply downsized from an original 3084x2056 pixels to 956x637 pixels saved as a new DNG.

I actually own the original Topaz Sharpen AI product.  When I use that on the same image it outputs a TIFF at the same image dimensions.

Is reducing the image dimensions an intentional behaviour?
