Auto Rigging not working

Hello, Im having a problem with the auto rigging. No matter what I do, how I prepare the model, I always get this message... (See attached screenshot)

This model is bare bones (pun intended), no rigging etc... What could be the matter?

my first guess would be the file type and the basic test is to convert it to wavefront Obj to see if that clears the error

if you share the model i'll be happy to test

Thanks anyway, I ended up keyframing the thing myself, no worries...
