Question

2 'photo shop' show under Adobe Suite in my W10 pgr list but only one working can't delete z other

In my list of programmes in W 10 under Adobe Suite CS4 I have two photoshop cs4 showing (only one of the of each of the others pgrs Soundbooth, Encore etc.)

One has 64 bits appended to it and it is the one that once launched will hang on the side of the screen and is unusable.

To clear it I can only do it with Task Manager and end the 'process'  Then I can click on the other one and it works well.
When I remember which one I have to click on, it's ok. However if I choose one showing on the taskbar (That I used before) It will launch the wrong one!

You might try resetting the Photoshop CS4 64 bit version preferences by going to

C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4

and move the Adobe Photoshop CS4 Settings folder to your desktop, then see if the 64 bit version of Photoshop CS4 will run.

During normal installs on a Windows x64 system, Photoshop CS4 is installed in both 64 and 32 bit versions, with the 32 bit version in C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4 and the 64 bit version in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4

Sounds like the 32 bit version is the one working.

The one big disadvantage of using the 32 bit version on a 64 bit Windows system is it can only use up to around 3.2 GB of ram, whereas the 64 bit CS4 Photoshop version can use as much ram as your system has available.

On the other hand there are many more 32 bit plugins especially older ones before 64 bit systems that can be used in the

32 bit Photoshop CS4 version and not in the 64 bit version, thus one of the reasons a 32 bit version is installed on 64 bit Windows system.

Did both Photoshop CS4 versions work at some point or is this a recent problem of the 64 bit version hanging and not opening?

Thank you very much for this Jeff. My video editing these days is very spasmodic and I installed my CS4 suite on a newer pc. But I seem to remember that the 64 version used to work. But now it shows only one third of it on the screen and freezes. That is only for photoshop, but I don't have this problem with Premiere pro. (as mentioned only photoshop shows up with 2 installed - And you explained why).

So, maybe I should stick with the 32 bits install since CS4 is pretty old now and try not to click on the wrong one!

Perhaps this should complete my query and not worry about it anymore.

@Michelmnr

that is prudent because, while you can reinstall cs4 on a compatible computer, you can not activate and use it beyond the 30 day trial.  even reinstalling the same computer is risky.  if you have any questions about this flag me (by using @kglad) in your post.

p.s.  i moved your original post from the wrong forum (using the community which is for issues about using the forums) to the correct one (ps) where this thread is now located.

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.

Oh, Sorry Kglad. I did not realise I was in the wrong place.  I looked for the community and ended up here.  But I see above "Move from using the community" not sure if I was moved in the correct place or if I have to.
