Question

Adobe Photoshop 2024, 2023 and Photoshop Beta all crash when opening on MacOS Sonoma

MacBook Pro 14" M1 Pro 32GB RAM 1TB SSD

Just like the subject line says; I installed Sonoma last night and tried to open all versions of Photoshop that I have and all crash. (Lightroom and After Effects still open, fyi.)

Am I going to have to fall back and reinstall Ventura?

Jeff,

Just verifying that I had the same problem and this tip worked by holding down shift key. Thanks for your detailed eye reading the report.

@Jeff Arola I noticed that about ON1 as well, for that particular app (Resize) I only had the trial version which expired so I uninstalled it which *may* have been the culprit, only I couldn't remember the key to press in order to load PS without the plugins so I couldn't do your suggestion. In any event, I went throught the rigmarole of reformatting my computer and reinstalling Ventura which got me back to zero, so to speak, so all is well. I only had to waste an afternoon doing that, lol. Ah well, I should have known better than to jump in on a new OS like that. (I even had to fall back to an old version of Final Cut due to plugins not working right in the new FCP...)

Actually the Crash report indicates the cause is On1 plugins and not photoshop itself.

If you still had Sonoma you could verify this by holding down the Shift key while starting photoshop to skip loading of the third party plugins or removing the On1plugins entirely and seeing On1 if has updated the plugins for Sonoma.

However, there are other issues with Photoshop and Sonoma, so going back to Ventua may not be a bad idea until both Adobe and Apple patch some the Sonoma bugs.

@briantium, ah, I suspect you are very smart. Wish it was better news right now. If you have any issues reverting, let us know. And I'll try to remember to update this post when Sonoma is confirmed for Photoshop. BTW, Sonoma is a lovely California county, if you've never been there. I'd say my favorite spot is Bodega Bay. Of course, that's where Alfred Hitchcock filmed “The Birds,” but in RL it's about as serene as it gets.

Yeah, reinstalling Ventura now; stupid me for jumping in before checking on whether key programs I use regularly work...😒

Hi @briantium, sorry to hear about it. Other users also experienced different issues running Photoshop 2024 with macOS Sonoma. Your post may be combined with those. According to this helpx article, it doesn't look like Photoshop has been added to Adobe's list of apps that are confirmed to be compatible with macOS 14 Sonoma. Can you revert to Ventura for the time being? There might be some fixes posted here in other threads in the meantime.

EDIT: I have both reinstalled Photoshop 2024 (and 2023) as well as rebooted my computer and it still crashes, fyi.
