Question

After Content-Aware Fill?

Hello,

I am using Photoshop 27.11 although this has been happening in earlier versions as well. After using Content-Aware Fill then flattening the image and Saving, I am unable to use the next tool properly as it seems to only adjust the previous area that was filled.  For instance if I use Shadows and Highlights after, only the new filled area is affected. The only way I can move forward is to close the file and reopen. Is there a setting I should adjust somewhere to allow the file to continue? Thanks so much for your help.

I found a solution.  If I merge visible, it seems to work.

I’m confused by these two statements. After an image is flattened, there should only be a Background layer with no “visible layers” left to merge.

Since this has been happening for you over several versions, can you do this for us?

    • Flatten the image
    • Open the Layers panel
Do you have one Background layer or do you have several layers?

A screenshot of your Layers panel before and after flattening might help us to sort this out for you.

Everything was merged, deselected and flattened and saved down to one Background layer. It is affecting more than just Shadows and Highlights. I noticed It happened when I applied a Stroke as well. It affects the previous selection ad not the entire image. The only way I can get it to work is to close the file and reopen.

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi,

The fact that closing and reopening the document resolves the problem is particularly interesting.

I noticed you've already tried Ctrl+D to deselect, and that Merge Visible only worked temporarily.

If you've genuinely flattened the document and removed any active selection, subsequent adjustments should affect the entire image.

I'm wondering whether Photoshop is retaining an incorrect editing state after Content-Aware Fill, or whether this could be a display refresh issue.

Could you try a few things?

    1. After using Content-Aware Fill, open the Layers panel and confirm that flattening has left you with a single Background layer.

    2. Open the Channels panel and make sure the composite RGB channel is active, rather than an individual channel or mask.

    3. Apply Shadows/Highlights and check whether the problem only occurs in the preview or whether the adjustment is actually restricted to the filled area after clicking OK.

    4. As a diagnostic, try temporarily disabling Use Graphics Processor under Preferences > Performance, restart Photoshop, and repeat the same workflow.

Adobe documents GPU-related issues that can cause incorrect or partial screen redraws, so the last test may help rule that out.

I'd also be interested to know which Content-Aware Fill method you're using: Edit > Content-Aware Fill with the dedicated workspace, or Edit > Fill > Content-Aware.

If you're using the dedicated workspace, what is Output To set to: Current Layer, New Layer or Duplicate Layer?

Since you've already provided your System Info, a short screen recording showing the Layers and Channels panels before and after the adjustment would probably be the most useful next step.

I wouldn't recommend reinstalling or resetting everything just yet. It would be better to establish exactly what's happening after the fill operation.

Thank you Eugene for your precise procedures.

1 Yes I can confirm that I merged, flattened, deselected the selection and I only have a single layer.

2 In the Channels panel, ALL the layers appear to be selected.

3 The problem only applies to the previously selected area. I noticed Stroke does the same thing so I imagine other tools are affected as well.

4 I disabled the Graphics Processor and there was no change

I am using Edit> Content- Aware Fill with the dedicated workspace.

I tried Current Layer and New Layer and there was no difference.

I am starting to think I need a fresh re-install, as I am noticing other Saving issues as well and some Bridge quirks. It’s unusual for me to have some many different items suddenly not working.

Would you happen to have a link on how to do a fresh reinstall if necessary? I’d love to save the Actions, Brushes, Preferences if possible.

Thanks so much for your help.

I am uploading a screenshot of what happens after with Shadows and Highlights,

Grrrrr...I thought Merge Visible was the solution but apparently not. Any help would be appreciated.  After using Content Aware Fill then flattening and saving, Shadow/Highlights as well as other tools only address the part that was reconstructed and not the whole image which is what I need. Anyone know how to fix this? Thank you.

Did you try Ctrl+D to deselect after using Content Aware Fill?

Yes. That didn’t help. Only Merge Visible seems to work.

The problem is that after using Content-Aware Fill, any additional adjustments only affect the newly filled area and not the whole image even if flattened and saved. The only way to continue is to close the file and reopen. I imagine there is a solution to this? Thx.

Thank you. I am attaching a pdf of the System Info as well as three screenshots. The first shows the area to be filled. The second shows it filled and the third shows what happens after Content -Aware Fill is finished, flattened and saved and then trying to use Shadows and Highlights. It only wants to affect the Content Aware area and not the full image even though it’s been flattened and saved. I am forced to close the file and reopen to use other tools, otherwise the adjustments will only affect the newly filled area.

For some reason I am not able to upload the screenshots. It is telling me the link has a problem and I cannot understand why. I tried to change the screen shots to jpgs but I am getting the same error message from the site.
