All tools suddenly unusable

Question

Using macbookair OS14.7 Adobe Photoshop 24.7.5

I have been working on a particular PS project for some time with no trouble. Now suddenly all tools (brush, stamp, eraser, etc) are blocked. I only get a circle with a line through it. If I open other older PS files or a new PS file, they work just fine but this one file has changed. Any idea what I may have unwittingly done to cause this lock-up?

Can you check which layer is selected from the layers panel and select a different layer to see if you experience the same behavior? If you experience the same behavior, it might be helpful to share a screenshot of the layers panel.
