art history brush - behavior differences between brushes

Good day,

I'm having an issue with a brush I'm trying to use as an art history brush. It behaves the way I want as a regular or mixer brush, but when trying to use as an art history brush, the strokes scatter like a web. Each click will scatter in different directions. I tested using a different brush I made, both at same settings, and it works just fine. See below behavior example between the two ....

Ideas?

Here is another example of the difference - left is cool in some cases, but absolutely no control - right is behaving the way it's supposed to - note brush size was brought down to 12% in order to get any detail at all from the "wonky" brush (both set same for purposes of comparison)

it's almost as if the "wonky" brush is giving a glass effect when using small size (which would be great in some cases) - even more - why the difference in behavior with all the same settings?
