Artboards to files error

I’m getting this error when trying to export artboards to files:

IOError: General Photoshop error occurred. This functionality may not be available in this version of Photoshop.

It’s happening with any file I try to export this way, even blank ones, and no matter what file type I select. I can use export as, quick export as PNG, etc. perfectly fine. This started today, before AND after I updated to V 27.11.

    Hi,

Since you've already tested different documents, including blank ones, and multiple file formats, I think we can reasonably rule out a problem with a particular document or export format.

The fact that Export As and Quick Export continue to work is also interesting.

Artboards to Files uses a separate Photoshop scripting workflow
, so it's possible the error is occurring within that process rather than the export functionality generally.

A few things I'd try before resetting preferences or reinstalling Photoshop:

    1. Create a new document containing two simple artboards and save it as a PSD on your local drive.
    2. Try File > Export > Artboards to Files, selecting a simple local destination folder such as one on your Desktop.
    3. Try File > Export > Artboards to PDF with the same document. Does that also produce an error?
    4. Check whether the error dialog contains any additional information below the general Photoshop error, particularly a command name or script line number.

Similar errors have been reported with Artboards to Files in previous Photoshop versions, sometimes with additional information identifying the particular command that failed.

Could you also confirm whether you're using Windows or macOS, and whether the error appears immediately after clicking Run?

I'd hold off on using the Cleaner Tool for now. Since the issue started before updating to 27.11 and other export methods still work, it would be useful to narrow down which part of the workflow is actually failing.

If you can share a screenshot of the complete error message and the Artboards to Files settings, that would help considerably.

@Chandler5FE2, exporting artboards is working as expected for me (Windows 11 Pro; Photoshop 27.11 Release). I tested using the artboard size Web Most Common (1366, 768). I exported to all the file types successfully. What settings are you trying? Does this error appear after you click the Run button?

Hi @Chandler5FE2, Thanks for reaching out to the Photoshop Community Forum! Let's try a few things to see if we can get rid of this error.

    1. Reset Photoshop Preferences: try manually resetting your Photoshop preferences:https://adobe.ly/3UgDdoY. Remember to back up your settings before doing the preference reset: https://adobe.ly/4ijFqJz.

    2. Create a New Document: Try creating a new document with artboards to see if the issue persists. If it works, the problem may be specific to the original document.

    3. Test Different File Types: Since the issue affects all file types, try exporting a simple artboard as a different file type (like JPEG or PNG) to see if the error persists.

    4. Use the Adobe Cleaner Tool to reinstall:  https://adobe.ly/4yQmE1p

If none of these steps work for you, we can continue troubleshooting and determine the next steps. I hope this helps! ^CH
