Dear Forum,

I attach herewith a photo of a corroded surface where some pits may be regarded as a "noise" on image.

There are some standardized charts and when doing an assessemnt of a corroded surface one tryies to best match the sample corroded surface to standardized chart. I have a question - is there some kind of an option withinh PS (including its AI module) to make a best match ? Or kind of assess the density of pits?

And also another important question  - having a ruler on the photo next to pitting - can PS evaluate the size of pits automatically?

My initial thought is to use histogram analysis to complement visual evaluation. The images had colour removed to reduce the variables and smooth out the readings. The clean reference image doesn't have gray tones, so you might first threshold the photo/scan before adding the gray fill in darken blend to further simplify the data and make it closer to the idealised reference image.
