Best editing options

Choosing the right editing app depends on the type of content you want to create and how much control you need. Useful features like trimming, filters, music, text, and transitions can make everyday editing much easier. Just understand that AI “pixel enhancing”, whether sharpening or upsampling, will always introduce image elements that weren’t there in the original, sometimes even completely unrelated to the image content. It may look impressive at first glance, but it will no longer be the original image. It is a new image that happens to resemble the original. Always, no exception.

If you’re OK with that, go ahead, but if authenticity matters, AI won’t help you. 

Poor focus cannot be repaired in post. That is an ancient photographic truth that unfortunately still holds. An out of focus shot is a lost shot.

If you have the credits then Generative AI is so good at this sort of edit, it’s hard to resist.  Same with poor focus.  Jesús Rameriz has a useful prompt in the screenshots for his free Prompt Vault plug in

Enhance this image with crisp , sharp focus an increased micro-detail throughout. Bring out surface textures, and material definition. Keep the pose, camera angle, composition, scale and lighting exactly the same.

I find the above prompt a bit too intense and tend to tone it down a bit.  I have been using.

Change focus making everything sharp.  Improve detail in the blown highlights. Improve detail in the overbright areas in the sky.  Improve the texture in the [insert name of target clothing etc.]

You’ll get the idea.  I still use the Topaz Photo and Gigapixel (full versions) for denoise and sharpen a lot, but when things are really bad, Gemini 3.1 and Flux Pro can work wonders, but the new sharp content is not the same as the original.

There’s a 15 year old video on YouTube of cranes getting it wrong in Ireland  It’s funny, but being so old, it is very blurred.  I thought it would be interesting to see if it could be improved with Generative AI and remade the video (a series of stills) and it is MUCH sharper, but some of the background (especially) is completely different. 

We tried it on an engineering drawing a while back, and it made it much clearer and sharper, but it was entirely useless as it was a completely different drawing with lines moved and text changed.  Just so you know.

As for 1 I would recommend trying AI but keep in mind the size limitations.

edit: The parent models (Flux, Gemini) may provide better »refocusing« or detail-creation but the size-limitations mean it may be necessary to apply in sections and manually correct the edges/transitions. 

And »as always« one should keep in mind that the result of such extensive AI-editing is not exactly a photograph anymore but digital artwork.
