Question

Black Color leaks out of selection borders using Lasso tool

I'm using:

- Photoshop V.  26.8.0

- Mac 0S 13.5 .2 Ventura

I'm using Photoshop as a timeline dustbuster and image masking scheme to restore old movies.

To reproduce the bug:

1- Use the Lasso Polygon tool to create a selection around a specific area of an image,,

    feathered 5-20 px.

2- Fill the image with black or color.

3- With Option Delete fill the area defined over a specific frame.

I note a streak of black or color has leaked out of the selection area.

The direction from the selection appears to be random but consistent,

marring an area of the frame I don't want touched.

Best as always,
Loren

Hi @lorenm84878416, thanks for reaching out!

Would you be able to share a screenshot or a quick screen recording of the issue? That’ll help us get a clearer idea of what’s going on and how best to help.

Thanks so much!
Alek

Hi, Aleke-

Screen recoording is being prepared!  Since I'm dealing with a movie restoration using PS tools and timeline, I'll send you a short video showing the phenomenon, thanks to Screenflow capture. Thank you for your interest.

The behavior is consistent. During animation of a 5-pixel feathered mask, which usually changes shape incrementally every movie frame- very fastidious hand work which cannot be translated into an Action - whenever I apply the adjusted selection to the current frame I'm restoring, the selection color fills the area as expected, but also squirts out a streak of black (or, I assume, whatever color is inside the selection area) well outside the selection.  To have to stop and repair the streak each frame makes critical frame-by-frame masking completely unworkable .

Best as always,
Loren

Hi Loren, thank you for sharing these details and preparing a screen recording. We will be looking forward to it.

To replicate this issue on our side, could you please confirm the following:
 • Are you working on a single frame in Photoshop or on a video timeline using the Video Layers workflow?
 • When filling the selection, are you using Option + Delete (Foreground Fill) with Normal blend mode at 100% opacity?
 • Is the selection on the same layer as the image, or are you working on a separate layer above?

Additional Info:
 • Does this happen only when the feather is set between 5–20 px, or even with zero feather?
 • Are the streaks always in the same direction (e.g., left, top), or completely random across frames?
 • Does reducing the timeline preview resolution or disabling GPU compositing (Preferences > Performance > Use Graphics Processor) change the behavior?

Once I have your answers and the video, I’ll try reproducing the exact steps on Photoshop 26.8 and confirm if it’s a regression or an environment-specific issue. If it’s reproducible, we’ll escalate it to the product team.

Looking forward to your reply!

Best,
